Nitrogen Tank Blanketing in Auburn

Nitrogen is utilized for many purposes in the specialty gas industry. Other than being used in food and drug preparation, it is used in the maintenance of different (typically highly flammable liquid) substances. This process of preventative maintenance is termed blanketing in the specialty gases industry.

In the majority of tank vessels there is headspace that, left void, can activate the oxidation process for materials that are liable to this occurrence. To keep these properties in their purest state during transportation and storage, high purity, dry nitrogen is used to replace the air that usually occupies the headspace in these tanks.

To control the amount of nitrogen that fills the tank, a valve control system on the tank adjusts nitrogen quantities. The valve adjusts to keep consistent positive pressure in the headspace of the tank. While the tank is emptying, there will be a substantial increase of nitrogen to account for the empty space.
