The Use of Liquid Nitrogen in Auburn Laboratory Research

Spec Air Specialty Gases has been producing PurityPlus® liquid nitrogen for Auburn-area laboratory use from our startup days. The one attribute that makes this commodity so advantagous in all kinds of laboratory activities – particularly as a refrigerant – is its capacity to retain temperatures significantly lower than the freezing point of water.

A previous blog we’ve posted describes the use of nitrogen in food processing. In its compact, readily transportable liquid form (which needn’t be pressurized), we offer it for such laboratory uses as …

  • cryogenics – involving the production and examination of low temperature extremes and how materials behave at such temperatures;
  • cryonics – the conservation of biological tissue (blood, reproductive cells, surgical samples, even human bodies) at uncommonly low temperatures in order to resuscitate them and reanimate them at some point in the future; also as a way to cryoconserve genetic resources;
  • energy storage (being a “vehicle” for it);
  • helping all types of scientific detection instruments function more effectively; and
  • creating lower pressures in laboratory vacuum systems.

As a coolant, liquid nitrogen is primarily applied by the laboratories that count on us …

  • to accomplish superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors;
  • to maintain the liquid helium cooling systems of high-field superconducting magnets, including those used in nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers and magnetic resonance imaging systems, at an extremely low temperature;
  • in cooling baths and other testing situations designed to cause especially low-temperature chemical reactions;
  • in vacuum-pump traps; and
  • in astronomy cameras having CCD image sensors.

These examples, as all-inclusive as they are, scarcely account for liquid nitrogen’s use in the laboratory. Our Auburn customers typically find their own, singular uses for it, just as they do for nitrogen in its gaseous state – which, of course, we also provide.

The fact is, more and more scientific, medical, and industrial research facilities hereabouts are turn|look|com]104]ing to us for the PurityPlus® nitrogen and liquid nitrogen they require in order to accomplish their research goals. They’ve found us to be a constant, ready source of these commodities. And they’ve come to count not only on our supplying them when they need them, but also on their demonstrable quality, our competitive prices, and the expert, personalized service of our team.
